On Thursday, we released our butterflies. Some of our little friends were hesitant, but they all eventually found their way into the sun. As each one left, our class waved and called out, “Goodbye, goodbye!” It was the sweetest.

Over the weekend, our fat caterpillars made their chrysalides and are now in the pupa stage. After letting them harden, they were moved onto the chrysalis station in the butterfly house. It won’t be long before we see those butterflies emerge!
All five of our caterpillars have made their way out of their chrysalides! The butterflies emerged slowly and then rested as their wings dried. It was amazing to watch! Within a few hours, they were flying around their butterfly house. We fed them some orange pieces which they seemed to enjoy. Tomorrow we will say goodbye to our new friends and release them into the woods near our school pond. We welcomed some new class pets into Room 113 today! As part of our scientific study of life cycles, we are observing five little caterpillars (Billy, Ella, Summer, Joe, and Bob the Builder). These new pets arrived by special delivery and created a lot of excitement in our classroom. Over the next few weeks, we will watch them carefully as they change into chrysalises and then painted lady butterflies! Our field trip to the zoo will extend this learning to animals and their young.
