Online Practice

With so many great educational websites available, it can be hard to choose the best ones for your first grader. Knowing how busy families can be, I recommend that you focus on two great websites, MOBYMAX and Raz-Kids. Through our very generous Parent Club, we have subscriptions for these websites which allow for individualized math and reading practice on a mobile device or on a home computer. MOBYMAX is great for fact fluency practice, just 5 minutes a night will provide the necessary review. Raz-Kids is perfect for weekends or vacations… or for those nights that your first grader forgot his/her take home book :). This website provides access to lots of books at your child’s level. As the books become more challenging, so do the quiz questions! Make sure that you are monitoring your child’s progress as he/she takes quizzes.

Online practice is fun and does provide great targeted skill practice, but should not replace that valuable one on one time that you spend reading or doing math together. Learning side by side is priceless and that is what your child will remember the most!

August is Here!

Wondering what your first grader can do for the few weeks left of SUMMER? Here are some ideas:

  1. READ …. READ…. then READ some more. You can read to your child or have your child read to you. Set a goal of at least 15 minutes per day.
  1. Use MOBYMAX.COM to maintain your first grader’s skills for math, reading, writing, science, etc. Set a goal of at least 15 minutes per day. Visit this post to find out more about earning points to enter a drawing for an ipad mini.
  1. Collect BOX TOPS to help earn money for our school. These box tops help us to buy books, playground equipment and many other items for our school. If every student in our school fills out one form with box tops, we will earn $3,000 for our school and possibly enough for another GAGA PIT! Form for BOX TOP collection:  Summer Box Tops

Fun Summer Learning

Looking for a fun way to keep your first grader learning this summer? MobyMax is a great program to prevent summer slide. This website allows students to practice skills online, providing feedback and review of important concepts needed for first grade. If your child is logging on to this website for the first time, try Fact Master, Math, or Numbers. After an assessment, your child will be given problems to strengthen needed areas. Just a few minutes of practice each day can help to maintain learning and keep brains active!

To encourage students, we have a Keep on Learning with MobyMax school contest. Learn more by visiting our school blog.  Also…all Georgetown students who reach their MOBYMAX goal (first grade goal is 200 points) will be entered into a drawing for an ipad mini!

Have fun!

Keep Learning This Summer

Studies have shown that learners can lose up to 50% of learning during summer vacation. Georgetown is challenging you and your child to “Keep Learning With Mobymax” this summer as a way to prevent summer slide. Georgetown teachers selected MobyMax as the online curriculum for summer vacation and extra curricular in school learning.

To learn more, visit our school blog.  Also…all those who earn their MOBYMAX points will be entered into a drawing for an ipad mini!

Moby Max

Dear Georgetown Parents,

We are excited to pilot a web-based curriculum called MobyMax in our PK-5 classrooms. In addition to access at school, all students have access to MobyMax at home. We are hopeful that this site will be a useful way for our students to practice skills during the school year, on those occasional snow days and through the summer months.

Features of MobyMax are as follows:

  • Tailored to your child’s individual needs.
  • Placement tests that identify strengths and needs.
  • Targeted instruction to “fill in” missing skills.
  • Systematic review sessions to keep skills fresh.

NOTE:  If your child is taking a placement test for a skill area, remind your child that the questions get harder and harder.  If the questions are hard, it might not have been taught yet, meaning it could be coming later in the year or in it isn’t taught until the next grade level.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Reagan and the Georgetown Teachers
