Over the weekend, our fat caterpillars made their chrysalides and are now in the pupa stage. After letting them harden, they were moved onto the chrysalis station in the butterfly house. It won’t be long before we see those butterflies emerge!

It was a very exciting morning in Room 113. Five painted lady caterpillars arrived! They came in their own special container, complete with food. We will watch as these caterpillars grow, shed their exoskeletons five times, weave sticky webs, turn into chrysalides, and then … transform into painted lady butterflies! Our class named these special new friends Crawly, Bob, Cally, Squishy, and Mr. Tickles. Follow this link to learn more about painted lady butterflies.
We welcomed some new class pets into Room 113 today! As part of our scientific study of life cycles, we are observing five little caterpillars (Billy, Ella, Summer, Joe, and Bob the Builder). These new pets arrived by special delivery and created a lot of excitement in our classroom. Over the next few weeks, we will watch them carefully as they change into chrysalises and then painted lady butterflies! Our field trip to the zoo will extend this learning to animals and their young.
