Reading Support
Nov 17th, 2008 by dbast
In September, first grade students were assessed in reading to provide information to guide instruction. Based on the outcome of this screening, children who met the criteria receive additional reading support.
I meet with children in a small group setting 5 days each week for a 30 minute period. The reading groups are flexible and provide instruction in targeted areas. This instruction is in addition to time spent on reading in the classroom. In our small groups we work on:
-developing strategies for sounding out words
-expanding basic sight word vocabulary
-reading with fluency and expression
-developing a positive attitude toward reading and writing
-writing as an extension of reading
-comprehension strategies
-retelling a selection after reading
We use a variety of means to reach these goals including games, readers’ theaters, poems, and guided reading. Home support is encouraged in order to continue practice on reading skills.
